When someone says “I’m going to run in Patagonia,” they probably aren’t talking about escaping a guanaco (although it can happen). They’re actually talking about two of the most spectacular races in the world: the Ultra Paine and the Patagonian International Marathon.
Both events are held in the magical surroundings of Torres del Paine National Park, but offer completely different experiences. Not sure which to choose? Don’t worry, we’ll help you decide.

🌍 1. The Terrain: Wild Trails or Scenic Byways?
Ultra Paine is trail running in its purest form: mud, roots, forests, sweaty climbs, and heart-pounding descents (from excitement… or fear). The trails are more technical, and every mile makes you feel like you’re running in a National Geographic documentary.
The Patagonian International Marathon, on the other hand, follows wider gravel roads. It’s a road race, but in nature. You’ll be able to run faster and enjoy unobstructed views while dodging—not obstacles—but curious sheep and guanacos.
📝 Easy summary:
- If you like skipping rocks, getting muddy, and talking about “elevation gains”: Ultra Paine.
- If you prefer to run without twisting your ankle: Patagonian Marathon.
⏱️ 2. Rhythm: Explore or compete?
At Ultra Paine, the clock is important… but no more so than the scenery. Here, you don’t run just for time; you run for the experience: a condor soaring overhead, the crunch of the forest beneath your shoes, the Patagonian wind greeting you (sometimes with a slap, yes, but with affection).
At the Patagonian International Marathon, the focus is more “marathon-like”: a stopwatch, pacing, energy gels, and even a mental playlist. Of course, given the surroundings, it’s impossible not to stop and take a photo.

👟 3. The Runners: What kind of madness do you have?
- At Ultra Paine, you’ll meet seasoned trail runners, people who train with poles and climb hills “for fun.” But there are also many beginners in shorter distances (7K or 14K), who come for the challenge and fall in love with the atmosphere.
- At the Patagonian Marathon, you’ll see many urban marathoners, triathletes, and street runners looking for something different. There are also trail runners new to the sport, as the terrain is friendly and not as technical.
🎁 4. And most importantly… Which one gives you the best story?
- With Ultra Paine, you’ll tell how you climbed a hill under the snow, how a fox looked at you strangely at kilometer 12, or how you cried (with emotion) when you reached the finish line with mud up to your knees.
- At the Patagonian Marathon, you’ll recount how you ran the most beautiful 42K of your life, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, with the wind in your face and a condor escorting you in the final kilometer.
🧡 What if you can't decide?
Do both! Many runners combine both events in different years. One to challenge yourself on the trail, the other to fly down the route with Torres del Paine in the background. The important thing is to experience Patagonia while running.
