Description

Fort Bulnes: a place near Punta Arenas and full of history

Our Fort Bulnes Tour begins and ends at Muelle Prat, where we’ll take you to discover this historic site located on the shores of the Strait of Magellan, 55 km south of Punta Arenas. This place is a historical reconstruction of the fort founded in October 1843.

In addition, you can admire the local flora and fauna, finding species such as lenga, ñire, notro, and a wide variety of birds.

Fort Bulnes holds a key importance in the history of the Magallanes region. During the administration of Manuel Bulnes, the then president decided to take effective possession of the site in anticipation of the possible expansion of European powers.

Learn about the human and natural history of the Magallanes region

On the Fort Bulnes Tour, you’ll visit several sites of interest that will immerse you in the region’s past. You’ll discover an exhibit on human and natural history related to the Strait of Magellan. Highlights include the Strait Viewpoint, the O’Higgins Lighthouse, and the church.

The fort originally had two batteries of two cannons each and an underground powder magazine. Its construction combined horizontally placed log systems and wooden structures filled with thatch. The facilities have been carefully reconstructed to preserve their original features.

The site of Fort Bulnes is the same one where the Spanish colonizers settled three centuries earlier.

Finally, we’ll make a mandatory stop at a geographical landmark: half of Chile (considering the territory from the northern border to the South Pole).
