Our tour begins with the pick-up of the passenger at his hotel, in the city of Puerto Natales. Then, we will start the transfer to the mysterious Sierra Baguales. After 2 hours of travel in the direction of Torres del Paine Park, we make a detour to Sierra Baguales, which is located about 60 kilometers to the northeast.

Once we arrive at the rural tourism ranch in Sierra Baguales, we will enjoy a welcome coffee and a talk about Patagonia and the hacienda. We will talk about the process of colonization of Patagonia, history of the first human occupations of the place, customs and social importance of the place for the first inhabitants of the region such as the Tehuelches or Aonikenk.

Laguna Irene Sector and Birdwatching

We will start our Trekking Sierra Baguales, which is divided into two sections in order to discover all the attractions offered by the 6,000 hectares where the activity takes place. In the first stage, we will take a short half-hour walk to visit Laguna Irene, an ideal place to observe and photograph the surrounding birds, in which the largest bird in Patagonia, the Andean condor, stands out.

Marine fossil sector

Then we will board our vehicle to go to where we will start the Trekking Sierra Baguales, which will cover an approximate distance of 12.5 km. We will take a medium intensity trail, with a view of the Bagual mountain rage, an area where pumas, guanacos and wild horses live. After a little more than 3 hours of walking, we will find marine fossils, which are more than 50 million years old.

The tour continues to a viewpoint located 1,200 meters above sea level, from where it is possible to have a panoramic view of the entire Sierra Baguales. With a bit of luck during our trek we can run into a herd of Baguales horses that inhabit the area. We will enjoy our box lunch, and then we will return to the ranch, to board the vehicle that will take us back to Puerto Natales.

The trip to Sierra Baguales was excellent, the whole crew was really super nice and took their time in explaining the history and geology of the place, especially regarding the fossils that are there in abundance, and some are old more than 60 million years, which is fascinating. Meanwhile, we saw a few significant birds, including the Condor, and the Black Swan, and also plants that are indigenous to the area, like the Yareta plant or the Calafate plant. We also saw some Guanacos, some were alive, and some were in skelleton form because the pumas ate them, so I got to see the place that is locally called the “Guanacos cemetary”. I am so glad I did this tour, because the scenery is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, and it’s really worth every penny since we hiked almost half a day, and enjoyed the scenery and nature along the way. The time passed so quickly because the guides were really funny and positive and we had such a laugh. All in all,I recommend it to be an absolute must.
